2017 GLOBAL MIGRATION FILM FESTIVAL
ΜARKING INTERNATIONAL MIGRANTS DAY
Following last year’s success in more than 89 countries around the world and with more than 7.000 spectators, the 2017 Global Migration Film Festival marks the International Migrants Day in Cyprus with a series of interesting movies from around the world.
Τhe 2017 Global Migration Film Festival event in Cyprus aims to reflect on the migration issues. The offices of the UN Migration Agency (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Cyprus and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), with the support of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus, have joined forces in this Film Festival to raise awareness about refugee and migration issues. The films that will be screened at the Global Migration Film Festival showcase the challenges refugees and migrants face in their daily lives.
The Global Migration Film Festival takes place under the United Nations “Together” initiative, which aims to change perceptions and attitudes towards refugees and migrants. Among the films to be screened will be the “El Peso De La Manta” (The Weight of the Blanket) and many award-winning short films that have been globally recognized for their artistic approach towards migration.
Since 2000, the International Migrants Day has been honored every year on December 18th. On that day in 1990, the General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
On September 19, 2016, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a set of commitments during its first -ver summit on large movements of refugees and migrants to enhance the protection of refugees and migrants. These commitments are known as the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants (NY Declaration). The NY Declaration reaffirms the importance of the international protection regime and represents a commitment by Member-States to strengthen and enhance mechanisms to protect people on the move. It paves the way for the adoption of two new global compacts in 2018: the global compact on refugees and the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration.
